Description

Durango School District 9-R is accepting applications for a Lead Security Specialist under the Safety and Security Department, at Durango High School, 1.0 FTE.  Position includes benefits and begins asap.

SUMMARY:  Maintain the safety and security of the students and campus before, during, and after school, foster an optimal learning environment and act as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by providing high visibility throughout the school; walking and surveying hallways, common areas, grounds and parking lots; monitoring group dynamics in order to identify potential fights and gang or hazardous activities; intervening in verbal and physical encounters among the students; defusing hostile situations; and enforcing safe school policies regarding weapons, tobacco, illegal substances, traffic rules, dress code, etc.

  • Discuss/immediate infractions with students, provide written accounts of unacceptable behavior/incidents to administrators and assist with assignment of disciplinary measures as necessary.  Report unsafe conditions and potential health and safety hazards to administrators and/or maintenance.
  • Monitor students during the lunch hour inside and outside of the building.
  • Investigate to identify students engaging in inappropriate behaviors when required.  May include talking to and questioning students regarding attendance and/or discipline matters to include written reports, reporting discipline incidents.
  • Maintain video surveillance integrity and monitor when appropriate to assess threats and potential hazardous dynamics/situations.
  • Participate in Threat Assessments as requested.
  • Direct traffic entering and leaving the parking lot, monitor curbside parking to assure safe and convenient parking for buses, and/or assist students locked out of cars.
  • Attend and participate in security meetings and training.
  • Retrieve students from class at the request of administration and escort them to specified locations.
  • Assist visitors and check for visitor passes. Verify Student Identification (student badges) upon entry into the school campus.   Request identification of non-students, provide directions, and/or escort off campus if necessary.
  • May provide security at sporting events and extracurricular activities outside of school hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Assist administrators, staff, students, and building visitors during drills and crisis situations (drills, evacuations, lockdowns, secure/lockouts, weapons/contraband control, bomb threats.) 
  • Communicate with SRO’s and local law enforcement regarding student and/or property matters.
  • Provide monthly safety and security metrics to include property logs to the Lead Security Specialist.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:  High School diploma. Courses in psychology and/or social studies equivalent to 2 years of college preferred.  Direct experience in school security and/or law enforcement academy, military security, military corrections training, or other applicable training preferred.  SRP/SRM trained.  Safe2Tell trained.  Threat Assessment trained.

 

 

EXPERIENCE:  Experience in the security field, such as police department or security guard, public/private school or university security technician or specialist preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:  CPI certified.  ICS100Sca and IS362 certified. Valid CO driver’s license required; CPR/First Aid/AED certifications preferred at hire.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator

 

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of two-way radios required within one month after entering position
  • Basic operating knowledge of personal computers and peripherals preferred at hire; required within one month after entering position
  • Basic operating knowledge of security cameras preferred at hire; required within one month after entering position
