Summary:
School counselors should possess the knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes
necessary to plan, organize, implement and evaluate a comprehensive, developmental,
results-based school counseling program that aligns with the ASCA National Model of
foundation, delivery, management and accountability as well as the mission of TJS.
They should abide by the Colorado state laws.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development
  • individual student academic program planning
  • interpreting cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests
  • providing counseling to students who have disciplinary problems
  • collaborating with teachers to present school counseling core curriculum lessons
  • analyzing grade-point averages in relationship to achievement
  • interpreting student records
  • providing teachers with suggestions for effective classroom management
  • ensuring student records are maintained as per state and federal regulations
  • helping the school principal identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems
  • providing individual and small-group counseling services to students
  • advocating for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and school attendance review boards
  • analyzing disaggregated data
  • Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems
  • Help students process their problems and plan goals and action
  • Mediate conflict between students and teachers
  • Improve parent/teacher relationships
  • Organize peer counseling programs
  • Refer students to psychologists and other mental health resources
  • Work on academic boards to improve learning conditions
  • Incorporate assessments and tools that are reflective of TJS needs
  • Any additional duties as determined by the Head of School

 

Education and Training
Master’s Degree in School Counseling from accredited university.

 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

  • Colorado Teaching License with endorsements for the levels and subject areas teaching.
  • Certification and/or experience in Restorative Justice or Montessori Methods preferred.

 

Experience

  • Experience of 4 years of counseling or more is necessary. Recommended Endorsements
  • Training through the American School Counselor Association (ASCA)

 

Technical Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
School counselors should articulate and demonstrate an understanding of:

  • The organizational structure and components of an effective school counseling program that aligns with the ASCA National Model
  • Barriers to student learning and use of advocacy and data-driven school counseling practices to close the achievement/opportunity gap
  • Individual counseling, group counseling and classroom instruction ensuring equitable access to resources promoting academic achievement, career development and personal/social development for every student
  • Collaborations with stakeholders such as parents and guardians, teachers, administrators and community leaders to create learning environments that promote educational equity and success for every student
  • Developmental theory, learning theories, social justice theory, multiculturalism, counseling theories and career counseling theories
  • The continuum of mental health services, including prevention and intervention strategies to enhance student success

 

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP

The Juniper School is an “At-Will” Employer.  This means that at any time TJS, or the employee, may terminate the employment relationship, with or without cause, with or without explanation, and with or without any particular period or form of advance notice.   

 

The Juniper School reserves the right to modify salary, benefits, responsibilities, duties, supervisors and work locations from time to time at its sole discretion. Additionally, as an exempt employee, you will be expected to work additional hours as required by your assignments and you are not eligible to receive overtime benefits. 

 Your employment with The Juniper School is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check as mandated by relevant law.  

As a TJS staff member, you will have the general responsibilities incident to that position, as set forth in the attached job description, and any additional duties as prescribed by the School.  In addition, you will be required to perform your job duties in accordance with the applicable standards for educational professionals and any and all applicable laws and regulations. You are also required to adhere to all relevant state and federal law, the school and district charter contract and to the School’s policies.
