SUMMARY: The Coordinator of Exceptional Student Services (ESS) plans, develops, coordinates, directs, implements and evaluates the activities and service delivery of exceptional student services. The ESS department encompasses special education, gifted and talented education, and health services (including school nursing and behavioral/social emotional health) The job of the Coordinator of Exceptional Student Services was established for the purpose/s of ensuring appropriate services and structures are in place that have a positive impact on inclusion and student achievement ; providing supportive collaboration with families and/or students; and complying with Federal, State, county and District policies, regulations and/or procedures.

- Develop, plan, implement, and administer a model for multi-tiered student support services
- Demonstrate and informally instruct local special education teachers in procedures for assessment, interpretation and prescription of diagnostic assessment instruments.
- Act as liaison with the public and mental health community for the purpose of developing programs supporting individual student development goals.
- Support building leaders, special education teachers, general education teachers with the implementation of classroom accommodations and modifications, student plans, differentiation, co-teaching strategies, and individualized instruction.
- Consults and collaborates with building leaders to ensure a continuum of services for students and support an inclusive model of service delivery.
- Participate in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.
- Participate as a team member in the monitoring and evaluation of student progress.
- Assists in the coordination of the district’s crisis team and provide support to other professional involved in crisis prevention, intervention, and after care.
- Assists in hiring, coaching, and evaluating Exceptional Student Services staff to include teachers, service providers, nurses.
- Lead professional development that supports inclusive practices for teachers and administrators that will positively impact student growth and achievement.
- Assists in reviewing department needs which include staffing, equipment, curriculum, and training.
- Assists Director of Exceptional Student Services in reviewing and submitting state and federal reporting requirements.
- Attends and leads student-focused multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Assist in creating, updating, and implementing department procedures and structures
- Attends regional and state level meetings as a Durango School District 9-R representative and report back to appropriate stakeholders
- Engages community stakeholders through communication, planning, advisory committees, and ongoing collaboration.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING Minimum: Master’s degree of related subject from accredited university.

Instructional Leadership
Building administration
District-level Leadership
Health Service Experience (to include social emotional and behavioral health)
Gifted and Talented Education
Special Education
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS
Colorado License in one or more of the following areas:
Principal
Administrator
Special Education Director
